Turquoise Numbered Side Table

I love this redo of a redo.

Here is the original piece...  So much potential!

And here is the first redo.  I painted it red and then white and then distressed the edges to show some of the red through.  I also printed up wording on canvas fabric and attached it to storage drawers to fit into the unit.  And added a can basket cause it looked cute. :)

But that just wasn't working for me so I decided to brighten it up a bit.

And here is the new look...

I really love the pop of turquoise.

And the shabby distressed stenciled number on top!

I kept the cane basket, cause it looks cute! :)

And added some original old vintage baking trays, lined with scrapbooking paper.

Add a few stacks of my favourite home decorating mags and there you have it.

My First Patchwork Quilt

I finished my first quilt!

I these are the fabrics I chose.

I decided to stick with a basic square design.  After cutting them out I laid them out on the floor in a pattern that I was happy with.

And then sewed all the squares together.

I added a layer of of batting, and then added another layer of floral fabric for the back.

I made my own bias for the edging from the backing fabric.

It's super light but really soft and cozy.

Although it's not perfectly square and has a few sewing lumps and bumps, I think it turned out great for a first attempt.

 What do you think?

Stencilled Pillowcases

Remember how I wanted new bedding with a mustard floral birdie pattern but couldn't find any? Well, I stenciled my own!

Here is what I was trying to replicate.

I'm really happy with the way my pillowcases turned out.  They are not perfectly stenciled, but I'm doubting anyone will look that closely. :)

And to save money and because we have a million white pillowcases, I just used ones we already had. The paint was the perfect shade of mustard, and was on sale for only $3 for a large tube.

Again, can't believe I didn't think of this before. So cheap and easy.

Vintage Buffet

I won this gorgeous vintage buffet on ebay on the weekend.
It was a last minute bid, but one I am  so glad I made.
The buffet is in mint condition for its age.
There are no scratches and the insides look like new.

I love the intricate handles, and the Queen Anne legs, and the scroll work on the doors,
and the carving on top.

I don't plan to paint or change it in any way just yet.  It's another keeper.

Window Mirror

I bought this window style mirror at a garage sale last weekend for $5 and I love it's individuality.

It appears to be quite old, with a metal chain hanger on the back.  And it also appears to be handmade using a cabinet door as there are hinge marks on one side at the back.  I wish now that I had asked the elderly gentleman that sold it to me if he had in fact made it.

Can you see the glue marks near the internal beading?  And those lovely age spots.

It's perfect in our entryway.

Aqua Queen Anne Bedside Tables

As part of my main bedroom makeover, I redid these beautiful antique bedside tables.

Here's a before shot.

After sanding all the glossy varnish off, I applied 3 coats of flat Aqua paint.
Following this I mixed up a watery black stain solution and working in sections, roughly brushed the stain on.

Then with a damp rag I roughly wiped the stain off to give an aged effect.
Then I used 240 grit sandpaper to distress the entire piece.
The handles also got a coat of gloss black spray paint.
Lastly, I added 2 coats of clear poly to seal and protect.

I absolutely love the way it turned out.
I have another one to do which will go on the other side of our bed.

DIY Pillowcases

I have been looking at lots of different bedding for our bedroom, but I can't find anything I really like.  So when I was in Spotlight yesterday I found this gorgeous green floral fabric and thought I'd give my first pillowcases a try.

I winged it by looking at one of my current pillow slips and they turned out fantastic!

Why didn't I think of making my own pillow slips before?  You can really mix and match your bedding up.  These ones would look super cute in my daughter's room too.

Each pillow case required 1 metre of fabric, and at $7 a metre, I made the two cases for $14.

Back to my inspirational photo:

Mustard check bedding is no where to be found, nor is the fabric, so that might have to wait.

And I also can't find any pretty yellow floral birdie quilt covers of fabric either.  So I've decided to stencil my own.  Wish me luck.

Main Bedroom Makeover Inspiration

Our main bedroom is also used as an office for my husband who works from home.  We have grand plans to turn our garage into a home office, but it just hasn't panned out yet.  Somehow I manage to declutter the garage, only to move more stuff in.  Arguhh!

For this reason I have put off making over our bedroom.

UNTIL, I saw this amazing photo and was totally inspired!
Absolutely gorgeous, hey?

I am in love with the white, aqua, yellow and mustard bedding colour combination.

And that amazing powder coat blue wrought iron bed is so "to die for" farmhouse style.

I love it all.  I want it all!  And with a little DIY, I'm hoping to make it mine. :)

Wish me luck!

Croup, coughs and colds continued...

My 2 year old son now has croup, which is a respiratory infection that causes the windpipe to swell making breathing difficult, mostly at night, accompanied by a seal-like cough.  It was likely brought on by a cold he got from one of us.  He is now on night time medication, is sleeping poorly day and night, and is miserable and clingy.  But he is still being a brave little soldier with the occasional cheeky little grin.  Meanwhile, my 4 year old daughter and myself still have coughs and runny noses.  We are all drained of energy and are being total couch potatos cuddling and watching DVD's all day.

I did get one little project done today, potting some colourful plants for the front verandah.  But I'll blog that when we are all feeling a bit better.

Sad Faces and Sympathy Please

I am so sick with the flu. :(

And now my two babies have got it too!  Now who is going to look after me? ;)

I feel so miserable, but even more miserable seeing my babies sick and coughing and losing their voices too.  Hang on, losing their voices.  Hallelujah!  Kidding.

So not much DIY going on here ..... okay, you know me too well.  Of course I'm doing something. :)  I'm painting my other set of lounge room wooden french doors.  Slowly, very slowly, and only after the Cold and Flu tablets kick in and give me a burst of energy.

So looks like it will be a slow start to July.

But I'll keep you posted! :)
