White on White Kitchen Tour

I recently repainted our kitchen Dulux White on White and thought I'd share a few, okay lots of photos. :)

Our kitchen is not big and fancy but I love it's charm.

Since we moved we have repainted the bench tops and all the cabinets. And I added MDF beading to all the cabinet doors and around the bottoms of the of the pantry and floor cabinets.

We added a DIY under cabinet light to the bench top to extra light. We currently have down lights on the ceiling but I'd love to change them to pendant lights.

I'd also love a new stove top and oven, if hubby is listening. ;)

I had open shelves on the left hand side of this photo, but I put the doors back on the cabinets as it just wasn't working out for me. I took off the door on the right of the stove top to lift the microwave off the counter.

And added some knickknacks to the top shelf.

I love the glass doors which display our everyday plates and dishes.

The space for the fridge looks like it was originally very small and the previous owners have taken out the cabinets above and added the awkward looking wall.

I'd love to enclose in over and around the fridge at some stage, somehow.  Had I know my decorating style beforehand I would have also chosen a white fridge.

Our kitchen is located in the centre of our house overlooking our sunroom so I don't actually have a kitchen window.  But we do have a sky light and the plantation shutters in the sunroom let in plenty of light.

I installed hooks under the top cupboards for easy access to our coffee cups.

And although I wasn't a big fan of subway tiles, they are beginning to grow on me.

I hope you like my white vintage farmhouse style kitchen.

My Vintage Farmhouse Style

I've FINALLY come to the conclusion that what truly makes me happy and most comfortable in my home is Vintage Farmhouse style incorporating lots of white and neutral colours.

I've FINALLY realised I can still love colour in other people's homes, but not have to think it would be great for me too, and keep recklessly splurging on colourful cushions and accessories, and repainting our walls different colours on a weekly basis!

And after having this "decorating" changing revelation, I've spent my week repainting the living and dining areas, entryway and hallway in Dulux Natural White.

And Dulux White on White in the sunroom and kitchen.

And yes, I'm exhausted from painting. Lucky I've done it so many times before that I've got a bit faster at it. But now my home is the gorgeous white backdrop I love.

I have promised myself I will not be repainting or redecorating these rooms again any time soon. I might tweak, but nothing dramatic or spontaneous.

I will embrace my cosy neutral home. :)

DIY Fabric Laptop Cover

In Winter my laptop is freezing. It is freezing to pick up and too cold to put on my lap. So I made it this cute floral padded cover to keep my baby warm. Yes, I love my MacBook Air. :)

I made one of these covers in drop cloth a while ago but it was getting a bit grubby and I wanted a change.

To start, I measured the size of the outside of my laptop by wrapping my padding around it and trimming to match. Then I cut a sheet of fabric, allowing about a 2cms overlap all round. I folded the edges of the fabric over the padding, pinned and then checked the size on my laptop again. Then I sewed all the edges with a basic straight stitch. If I decide to wash the cover rather than replacing it I'll overlock the edges then. For now it works just fine.

And finally I added elastic on each corner making sure it fit snuggly.

The elastic is thin enough that my laptop closes easily.

This whole project took me about half an hour and was made from left over materials. So I'm very happy with my free laptop cover. :)

Dulux Whites - Colour Help Please!

It's so frustrating that you can like a colour on one wall in one area of your home, and that exact same colour looks totally different on a different wall in a different room in a different light. In fact, you can have the same colour in the same room and have it look totally different on different walls, depending where the light falls. And so begins my frustration.  Anyone would think I sit and stare at the walls all day and night. Well, just maybe I do. Haha.

Which brings me to the new colour in our lounge and dining areas, that is all of a week old.

Every wall appears different and some walls look dreadfully yellow in certain lights. So, I'm back to researching paint colours again.  The sort of good news is that I'm leaning towards a shade of white. Or not. Have you seen how many different whites there are!

Yesterday, after much Googling, I bought 4 litres of Dulux White on White.  The colour swatch in the shop makes it look like a really bright pure white.

Today, I painted the kitchen and the sun room. And after just one coat, the sunroom looks good, but the kitchen (which is not as bright) has an awful blue tinge to it which many other bloggers have mentioned also experiencing. Arughhhh!!!!!  It's all in the lighting I tell you.

So out with the Dulux Whites colour brochure again. I narrowed it down to Natural White and Antique White USA.  They have been voted the top 2 paint choices by Dulux.

The only issue here is that hubby and I both painted the entire house Antique White USA when we moved in and after a year or so I felt like it made the house feel cold. Then again, it might just have been cause it was Winter, but I won't admit that.

Here I might add that since the initial paint, hubby has refused to help repaint any rooms as he said he did it once, and that was enough. If I want to keep changing it, then I can do it alone. And I have. The living room has been a pale blue, sunny yellow, Hogs Bristle brown, and the current Chalk USA, and I'm still not happy. I'm sure the room is smaller from the various layers of paint I've applied!

Going back to Antique White doesn't feel like the best decision either, but then again ...

So I grabbed sample pots of both and have done swatches on the walls in the kitchen and living room. The Natural White is brighter and  the Antique White is browny/creamier. But overall, the difference in shades is minimal, at night anyway.  I guess I will do the "right" thing (so not like me at all) and instead of rushing ahead I will see how the swatches look tomorrow in daylight at different times of the day.

Have you had any experience with Dulux shades of white? Do you have a preference?

Thanks, J

Updated - A Few Changes to the Dining Room

Hi, I just wanted to share a few small changes in the dining room.

Firstly, the walls are now a creamier colour, matching in with the recently repainted lounge room.

And in keeping with adding a few "real" pot plants to our home, I purchased this one and a cute little green pot for it to grow in.  No more searching my bare garden for something to put on the table or spending a fortune of cut flowers at the shop.

The cute little green glass candle holders I found in a discount store for $3 each.  They add a bit of colour to the table.

And I've removed the lamps and simplified the decor on my buffet.

Like I said, just a few small changes. :)

Lounge Room Restyle Tour including Pops of Green & Real House Plants!

Welcome to my lounge room restyle tour.

Get comfy and prepare yourself for lots of pretty pictures. :)

So lately I've been wanting to add a bit more colour and some real house plants into our lounge room.

For the addition of colour, I started with some new sofa cushions.

I wanted to stick with shades of green as the rest of our house is very neutral, and it's a bit daunting to go for anything too out of my comfort zone.

Target had a big sale on cushions with 30% off most, and a lot on sale for half price and less.

The floral green covers I sewed out of some gorgeous pillow cases I bought a while ago but have never used.

I've rearranged them and sat and looked and scrutinised them from the opposite lounge and think I'm happy with them. Is it just me, or is picking and coordinating cushions one of the hardest things ever??

I've also been rearranging some areas around the lounge room with different decor items, again just for a change and freshening up. Some times things get a bit dull so it's nice to change things up a bit. :)

I love my turquoise display table and it now displays some of my favourite items.

My previous post got me thinking about incorporating some more "real" house plants into our home, so I moved my peace lily from the entryway into the lounge room.

The side tables next to my sofa also had a bit of tweaking, including a new pot plant ...

A new plant for the coffee table, and the other side of the lounge...

A new lamp base ...

And a new coconut and lime scented candle ...

I also changed up the cabinet top next to the tv ...

Including another new large coconut and lime scented candle ...

And if you haven't already noticed, I also repainted the walls a lighter creamier colour. I went with Dulux Chalk USA to match the entryway.

To remind you, here are a few before photos ...

And now ...

What do you think?
