A New Addition To Our Family!

Meet the new addition to our family!

Sparkles (chosen by my daughter) is a 12 week old Ragdoll kitten.

And after less than 24 hours, she has stolen everyone's heart, including hubby. :)

She is the sweetest little thing with the most beautiful temperament.

She is going to be one very spoilt cat.

Faux Plank Farmhouse Table

Yep, I faux planked our dining table. I have been bored with it for a while but hubby wouldn't let me touch it. So, after he went to work one day, I did my thing, hoping he wouldn't notice. ;)

Here is how our table looked before ...

When we purchased it 4 years ago, we painted half of it white. 4 years later and there are numerous scratches on top and varnish flaking off. I sanded a patch to see what type of wood was underneath, but that was extra messy so stripping and re-staining was out.

When in doubt, get out the chalk paint!

I have been wanting a farmhouse planked table top for ages. But I haven't found hardwood planks readily available or cheap. So I decided to faux it. :)

After applying 3 coats of white chalk paint I gave the table a good sand, distressing the edges.

Then I got out the tape measure and penciled on my plank lines. I used a wooden ruler and the sharp edge of a metal paint scrapper to cut into the wood and mark out the lines. This left a small groove in the table to add to the authenticity.

Then I used 60 grit sandpaper down each slit to make them look a bit wider and more roughed up.

Finally I sanded flat down each line to get a bit more distressing on each "plank".

Then I distressed the edges a bit more, and lastly gave the whole table another sand with 220 grit sandpaper.

To seal and protect I decided to go with a few coats of flat clear varnish.

I plan to paint the legs in white chalk paint too, as well as the chairs and their seats. And hopefully hubby will build me a bench seat to go along one side. After he gets over the shock of course. ;)

My White Vintage Sideboard

This is my beloved dining room sideboard.

This is how is used to look...

I had replaced out the original vintage hardware with crystal knobs and black drawer pulls.

But after recently completing another sideboard, I decided to put back the original hardware.

And while I was at it, I decided to give it a fresh coat of white chalk paint, a light distress around the edges, and a clear coat of wax.

I think it looks so much better now.

My Dining Room Christmas Sign Tweaked

I really wanted to tweak the Christmas sign I made last year. It was a bit boring.

This is the original sign ...

I gave the background a rough coat of whitewash.

Then painted over the wording in white paint.

And added a few sparkly stars.

Much better, don't you think?

Wooden Christmas Tree Restyled

Last year I made a large wooden tree Advent Calendar which looked like this ...

Original Post Here

This year, I decided to make it a bit more farmhouse style friendly.

I took off all the bags and hot glued pegs and added a few coats of roughly brushed on white paint.

To hang the decorations I used gold push pins and just painted over the tops with the same white paint so they would blend in.

Then I added an assortment of similar sized gold ornaments.

And a gold star.

I love how it turned out. It's a keeper. :)

Farewell Cute Little Drop Front Vintage Writing Desk

I restyled this writing desk 3 years ago (original post here) and it is still one my favourite pieces of furniture. I don't use it as a writing desk, more for storage and show in the entryway.

It was originally all timber, till I painted it white.

I loving distressed the edges, followed by 2 clear coats of wax.

And added super cute turquoise polkadot contact to the drawer and inside shelves.

Or yeah, and added this inspiring little saying to the inside of the drop down.

With it's original vintage hardware.

And key.

And beautiful Queen Anne legs.

Did I mention all that storage?

And now it is time for her to go to a new home. I have something else for this little space which I will be sharing with you shortly. :)
