DIY Wooden Tree Christmas Advent Calendar
Another project I was keen to complete was this Wooden Tree Advent Calendar.
I procrastinated on this one too long and when December began I opted to buy the kids the cardboard Advent Calendars from Target instead. They were so tacky that I knew I had to get mine done asap. And I finally did!! Whoohoo!!
I had two long planks of wood spare in the garage which I knew would be perfect for my tree frame. The first night I sat down and did all the measurements on paper first, then cut my lengths. I used a super wood glue to put the pieces together and clamped them overnight to dry. The next day I mixed up a wash of brown paint and gave the whole lot a couple of coats and let it dry outside.
That night I attached my little Christmas pegs using my glue gun. The pegs were 30% off at Bed Bath n' Table and with 12 in each pack, 2 packets did the job perfectly. And my tree frame was complete.
I found the pre-made Advent drawstring pouches at Spotlight for $17 for the set of 24. I had planned on making them from scratch, but these ones were so cute and such a time saver. I could never have made those cute felt shaped numbers. I attached each one to a peg, leaving the days past clipped open. The rest I filled with mini chocolate Santas.
I found the large white wicker star for the top of the tree at a discount Christmas shop. I've attached it with twine so I change take it off easily and change it in coming years if I want to.
Lastly, I attached some twine on the back of the tree and hung it off my Chalkboard Hanger in the hall. The kids take turns opening a bag each morning and have a chocolate each. On the chalkboard we are writing the date of each day to correspond with the matching numbered bag.
I'm so happy with how my Advent tree turned out, and most importantly, the kids love it.
