Epic Tile Fail in the Bathroom

I'm still working on the mini makeover in the bathroom and wanted to share an epic fail project from a while back when I decided to paint over the floral tiles in the bathroom.

I can't exactly remember what I used to paint over them, but I think it was chalk paint and then clear varnish. I know ... oh dear!

The tiles started flaking and started to look tacky. So I scrapped one wall and the others just got forgotten. For months. I don't like the tiles, but what's a girl to do? I could try proper tile paint but I'm worried the white won't be the same white (as above), or if I go coloured it will look tacky again. I think for the moment I just have to suck it up and live with them.

So I've stripped off the rest of the paint using a bladed paint scraper. I love these things. They are so effective at removing layers of paint quickly.

It was a super messy job.  Those flakes are like dust bunnies and tend to magically move throughout the house if you're not careful.

So the bathroom walls are now back to the way they were when we moved in 4 years ago and they aren't so bad. :)

I'll be doing a full bathroom mini makeover reveal tomorrow!

  1. When I moved into my home someone had painted the black and white tiles floor to half way up the wall and all around the bathroom a mauve-pink. I thought it would easily come off and on the actual tiles it did come off although not too easily but where the grout is the pink still shows in spots. After 15 years I am so over it.

    1. Have you tried painting the grout? I did the floor tiles and they came up great. Pink would have driven me crazy too. :) Julie

  2. I love those scrapers too--bummer you had to do all that work!

  3. I don't mind the floral tiles...I'd paint the cabinet in one of the colours in the tiles and add some bright towels!

    1. Thanks Cheryl. I'll keep that in mind. :) Julie
