Installing Our New Letterbox

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a lovely Easter. The DIY didn't stop at our house.
Easter Friday we decided to install a new letterbox.
Why, well, look below to see the old one.  Just awful, right?
So, a few weeks ago I picked up this letterbox from Bunnings. Look how shiny. :)
And here is how we installed it.
Firstly I trimmed our hedge away from the old pole.  I wanted plenty of room to work with and we definitely needed it to dig out the old letterbox. Ours was cemented into the soil, so we/hubby had to dig around it.
And using lots of muscle, pull that thing out.  Woohoo!
Was this an easy job? Heck no!!!
But when its out, you (or hubby) feel so much better. Hehe.
After the old letterbox was out, the hole was way too big for the new one, so we decided to use the cardboard box from the new letterbox as a template for our concrete. We just cut the base out of the box so the concrete could still set into the soil, but not spread too wide.
Then we positioned our pole in the box and soil, using the spirit level to make sure it was straight.
What also came in handy was a towel rack to support the pole while the concrete was drying.
Here is our pole all ready for the concrete to be poured.
We purchased a regular bag of concrete mix from Bunnings. You just add water and stir.
Then we poured the concrete in the box, again checking to make sure the pole was straight before leaving it to set.
Then we waited about 4 hours for it to dry.
It wasn't completely dry, but it was secure enough to remove the box and towel rack.
Then hubby filled in the hole with the excess soil we had dug out and firmed it all down securely.
Lastly, we screwed the letter box to the top of the pole.
(Okay, so first time I screwed it with the opening the wrong way round. Easy fix and I will live it down, eventually.)
And lastly I added some hardwood bark mulch to the base of the pole to make it look pretty. :)
So here is the before again...
And the very pretty after ...
A job well done. Tick that one off the list.
