Easy Farmhouse Style TV Cabinet Makeover

We've had our TV cabinet for over 10 years now and I have been wanting to do something with it for a long time. (Please ignore the size of our TV, it's a husband thing!)

Remember I cut out the side of the cabinet to provide better air flow for our gaming consoles?

I even thought of replacing it.  Why you may ask. Well, let's start with the dark shiny lacquer top which effortlessly picks up and proudly displays every speck of dust. Plus, there were tiny paint splatters on the lacquer which would just not come off. I also hated the drawer and door hardware. They're a weird shape and the colour just didn't match anything. And finally, one of the legs kept coming apart when I moved it.

In desperation I decided to give it a little hand sand on the front to see what was under that nasty lacquer. And guess what. Beautiful wood!
So we emptied everything out and carried it outside.
And I spent the afternoon sanding off all that dark lacquer with my Dewalt Orbital Sander.

Then I applied 2 coats of clear varnish and moved her back inside.
It's a bit hard to get the exact tone of the wood with a photo, but it is a lot lighter than it was and doesn't show any dust!

And the tone of the wood even makes the door and drawer hardware look better. I haven't found an alternative to what is on them as they are flat latches, so for the time being, they will stay.

I even fixed the leg by putting a long screw into it to hold it together.

Here's the before again ...

And now ...

Yep, wish I'd done that years ago.  This is definitely a restyle relove project.

I'm trying to keep busy as I hope you are too.

Take care and stay safe,
