Entryway Table Makeover Farmhouse Style

I recently shared my mini makeover in the entryway and mentioned that the hall table didn't escape unchanged. Below is my DIY original natural pine entry table that I had clear coated with varnish.
And now, it's a beautiful farmhouse style aged walnut colour with a flat wax finish.
I didn't want to sand off the clear varnish and knew I needed something for the stain to stick to that didn't cover the woodgrain. So I started by mixing up a some white paint with water and gave the whole piece a white wash.
After the paint had dried, I began applying my varnish in stokes in the direction of the wood.
I applied two coats of walnut varnish and left it for a few hours to dry.
Then I used a clean rag to wipe off all the excess varnish. Leaving more in some places such as the leg grooves.
Lastly I applied a couple of coats of Annie Sloan clear wax. I have never used her wax before and must admit it was a bit of trial and error. I didn't have a wax brush so I just used a rag to apply and spread the wax.  I loved how easy it was to spread, but it was also hard to see where it had been applied.
I did find the wax lifted the varnish in some places, but that just added to the aged appearance. You can buff the wax afterwards but I preferred the flatter appearance.  The instructions said you can lightly use the table after a few hours but that it takes up to a month for the wax to fully cure. So I'll wait and see how it goes in a few weeks time.
I really like the way it looks with my newly painted mirror. The colour is much more my style.
And here are a few fun pics of the entryway taken from the living room.

Take care and stay safe!

  1. Gorgeous, Julie... I sure hope we get to see this at Tuesday Turn About! I'm pinning, because I would LOVE to create one of these narrow tables/shelving units for my tiny hallway. Maybe add a middle shelf and use for a bookshelf!
